How to Calculate Electricity Cost

To calculate the cost of electricity, you need to know the power consumption of the device (in Watts or Kilowatts), the time it is used, and the electricity rate charged by your utility company.

Formula

Cost = (Power(kW) × Time(h)) × Rate(per kWh)

If your power is in Watts, divide by 1000 to get Kilowatts first:
Power(kW) = Power(W) / 1000

Calculation Example

Question: A 1500 Watt space heater runs for 4 hours a day. The electricity rate is $0.15 per kWh. How much does it cost per day?

Answer:
1. Convert Watts to kW: 1500 W / 1000 = 1.5 kW
2. Calculate Energy: 1.5 kW × 4 h = 6 kWh
3. Calculate Cost: 6 kWh × $0.15 = $0.90 per day

Tips for Saving Energy

  • Unplug idle electronics: Many devices use "vampire power" even when turned off.
  • Use LED bulbs: They use significantly less power than incandescent bulbs.
  • Check energy labels: Look for Energy Star rated appliances.
